About Karyn Kiyoko Kusama
Karyn Kiyoko Kusama (born March 21, 1968) is an American director, filmmaker, and producer. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri and is known for her work on projects such as Æon Flux, Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation, a segment in the horror anthology film XX, and the hit show Yellowjackets.
Before pursuing filmmaking professionally she grew up with a strong interest in the industry and watching movies. Her inspiration to become a filmmaker came from observing female directors Martha Coolidge and Amy Heckerling. After graduating from Ladue Horton Watkins High School in St. Louis, she went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and Television from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1990.
Her breakthrough came with her debut film Girlfight which won her Best Director at Sundance Film Festival and earned her a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature.
In addition to her impressive career behind the camera, Kusama has also taken up boxing which greatly influenced her breakout film Girlfight where she trained with well-known Spanish trainer Hector Roca.
Kusama was raised by parents Haruo Kusama and Susan McGuire; her father being a child psychiatrist and mother an occupational therapist. In October 2006 she married screenwriter Phil Hay with whom she shares one son.
