About Karen Cushman
Karen Cushman is an American novelist born on October 4, 1941 in Chicago, Illinois. She is known for her work as a historical fiction author, particularly for the novels The Midwife’s Apprentice (1995) and Catherine, Called Birdy (1994), both of which won the Newbery Medal.
Before gaining fame as a writer, Cushman earned degrees in English and Greek from Stanford University before completing her master’s degree in human behavior.
In addition to her acclaimed works, she also received the John and Patricia Beatty Award for her book The Ballad of Lucy Whipple in 1997.
Cushman was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois.
