About Kalpana Chawla
Kalpana Chawla was born on March 17, 1962, in Karnal, India. She was NASA’s first Indian astronaut and the first Indian-born woman in space. Tragically, she died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. During her career at NASA, she served as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator.
Before fame, Chawla earned her undergraduate degree in India before pursuing her M.S. and Ph.D. in aerospace engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Shortly after her death, India’s Prime Minister announced the renaming of a series of weather satellites to KAPLANA in her honor.
Chawla grew up in Karnal, Haryana and married Jean-Pierre Harrison in 1983.
