About Junko Onishi
Junko Onishi, born on April 16, 1967 in Kyoto, Japan, is a renowned pianist known for her contributions to post-bop jazz. She has often been compared favorably to jazz great McCoy Tyner and admired contemporaries such as Kenny Kirkland and Mulgrew Miller.
Prior to gaining fame in the jazz world, Onishi studied at the prestigious Berklee College of Music before relocating to New York City where she further honed her musical talents.
Of note is Onishi’s song “Trinity,” which was featured in the 1997 documentary “Blue Note: A Story of Modern jazz.”
Although born in Kyoto, she grew up in Tokyo where her family supported and nurtured her musical abilities by enrolling her in classical piano lessons.
