About June Jordan
June Jordan, born on July 9, 1936 in New York, was a Caribbean-American poet known for her significant literary works including His Own Where (1972), I Was Looking at the Ceiling and then I Saw the Sky (1995), and Some of Us Did Not Die (2003). In addition to her poetic contributions, she was also recognized for her activism as an advocate of Civil Rights, women’s rights, and LGBT equality.
Jordan began writing poetry at a young age and went on to attend Barnard College. Her debut literary work was a collection of children’s poems titled Who Look at Me, published in 1969. She received several honors and awards throughout her career, including the Rockefeller grant for creative writing.
June Jordan was the daughter of Mildred Maud Jordan and Granville Ivanhoe. She married Michael Meyer in 1955; however, they divorced after ten years and had one son named Christopher.
