Julia Ward Howe was born on May 27, 1819 in New York City, New York. She was a prominent civil rights leader, recognized for her work as an abolitionist, author, and poet.

Prior to gaining fame for her social activism, Julia received education from governesses and attended private schools. In 1843 she married Samuel Gridley Howe.

One of her most notable achievements is the writing of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” in 1861 which subsequently became a famous American patriotic song.
