About Juanita Brooks
Juanita Brooks (January 15, 1898 – August 26, 1989) was an American novelist born in Bunkerville, Nevada. She was the daughter of Mormon pioneers and is known for her meticulous research on a controversial event in Mormon history which she chronicled in her 1950 work, The Mountain Meadows Massacre. Her other published works include On the Ragged Edge: The Life and Times of Dudley Leavitt (1973) and On the Mormon Frontier: The Diary of Hosea Stout (1964).
Brooks attended Brigham Young University and later Columbia University. She pursued a teaching career before focusing on researching Mormon pioneer life. She was married to Will Brooks in 1933 and became the mother of four children.
Brooks bravely delved into a dark chapter of her people’s history with unwavering commitment to truth; she attributed responsibility for the infamous Mountain Meadows Massacre to then-Mormon leader Brigham Young.
