About Joyce Carol Oates
Joyce Carol Oates is an American author born on June 16, 1938 in Lockport, New York. She is acclaimed for her extensive body of work which includes novels, short stories, plays, poems, and essays. Notably, she was the recipient of the National Book Award for her novel “them” in 1969 and received Pulitzer Prize nominations for “Black Water” (1992), “What I Lived For” (1994), and “Blonde” (2000).
Oates began writing at a young age and was the first in her family to complete high school. After graduating as valedictorian from Syracuse University in 1960, she published her debut novel, “With Shuddering Fall,” four years later.
Recognized for her literary prowess early on in her career when she won the O. Henry Award in 1967 for her short story “In the Region of Ice,” Oates went on to teach creative writing at Princeton University a decade later.
In 1961, Joyce Carol Oates married Raymond J. Smith; however, their marriage ended with Smith’s unexpected passing due to pneumonia in 2008 after nearly forty years together. Following this loss,Oates remarried to Charles Grossinin asmall ceremonyin2010.
