About Joyce Banda
Joyce Banda, born on April 12, 1950 in Australia, is a prominent world leader and women’s rights activist. In 2012, she made history by becoming the first female President of Malawi and also founded the People’s Party in 2011.
Prior to her presidency, Banda faced political turmoil as she was sworn in as president following the death of her predecessor Bingu wa Mutharika. Despite attempts by Mutharika’s associates to install his brother as president, Banda overcame these obstacles.
Banda initially served as vice president after being elected in 2009 and became known for openly criticizing President Mutharika. Notably, she withstood efforts to remove her from office despite their strained relationship.
Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that Banda’s sister served as CEO of the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls charity sponsored by Madonna.
