About Joy Powell
Joy Powell (born March 5, 1962) is an American religious leader and community activist known for her activism against gang violence and police injustice. Prior to her arrest in 2006 for burglary, she led a Pentecostal church in Rochester, New York.
In 1995, Powell claimed she was raped by a corrections officer. When the police refused to investigate, she organized rallies to raise awareness of police brutality and injustice. This led to her arrest in 2009 for the second-degree murder of James Rutledge that occurred in 1992 while she was serving time in prison.
Throughout her incarceration, there has been a movement calling for Powell’s release with the creation of the Free Joy Powell website. Despite facing personal tragedy with the death of her son Terrell Blake after a shootout with the police in 2018.
