About Jovita Idar
Jovita Idar, born on September 7, 1885 in Laredo, Texas, was a prominent civil rights activist known for her advocacy of Mexican and Mexican-American rights. In 1911, she became the president of the League of Mexican Women and made significant contributions as a journalist for La Cronica during the Mexican Revolution. Prior to her activism, she showed early talent as a poet and received recognition for her writing. She also earned a teaching certificate from the Holding Institute in Laredo in 1903.
In recognition of her influential work, Jovita Idar was featured in the Google Doodle during Hispanic Heritage Month in September 2020. Her legacy has been honored with appearances of her photos in notable institutions such as the National Women’s History Museum and The Oxford Encyclopedia of Latinos and Latinas in the United States (2005 edition).
She had seven siblings and was married to Bartolo. Her parents were Jovita and Nicasio Idar.
