About Josephine Butler
Josephine Butler, born on April 13, 1828 in England, was an activist known for her Victorian-era social reform work. She fought to abolish the Contagious Diseases Acts, which were harmful to young women and female prostitutes. Additionally, as an author, she published works such as The Education and Employment of Women and The Constitution Violated.
Prior to her activism, Butler became involved in Christian and social welfare causes after experiencing the accidental death of her five-year-old daughter. Notably, she played a significant role in establishing the North of England Council for Promoting the Higher Education of Women.
She grew up in Northumberland, England as the daughter of Hannah Eliza Annett and John Grey. Josephine’s marriage to George Butler lasted nearly four decades and resulted in three sons and one daughter.
