About Josephine Bonaparte
Josephine Bonaparte, born on June 23, 1763 in Martinique, France, was the Empress of the French and first wife of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte from 1804 to 1810. Commonly known as Josephine de Beauharnais, she was a patron of the arts and a leading collector in her time.
Before fame, Josephine replaced her older sister in marrying Alexandre de Beauharnais after her untimely death at age 12. The marriage was unhappy and ended with a court-ordered separation after Alexandre abandoned his family for a tryst.
Notably, Napoleon wrote many love letters to Josephine during their relationship. Despite being six years older than him and unable to conceive children, they remained devoted to each other even through their divorce ceremony.
Born into wealth but facing financial struggles after hurricanes destroyed their estate in 1766, Josephine’s first husband was guillotined during the Reign of Terror. They had two children together.
She died of pneumonia in 1814 after allegedly pleading with Alexander I of Russia on behalf of Napoleon during his exile
