Joni James, born Giovanna Carmella Babbo on September 22, 1930 in Illinois, is a popular pop singer known for her hits “Have You Heard?,” “Why Don’t You Believe Me?,” and “How Important Can It Be?” She began her entertainment career as a performer at Chicago’s Edgewater Beach Hotel after studying dance and vocal music in high school. Joni James was the first American-born artist to record at Abbey Road Studios in London, England. Her first marriage was to musician Tony Acquaviva until his passing in the mid-1980s, and she later married retired military officer Bernard Adolph Schriever in 1997 until his death in 2005.
