Johnny Horton (1925-04-30) was a country singer known for his saga songs like “The Battle of New Orleans,” acclaimed for combining history and country music. This unique blend catapulted him to fame, earning him a Grammy Award for Best Country Album.Prior to his musical career, Horton had intended to join the seminary after high school but instead ventured to Alaska in 1949 before returning to California and working at Hollywood’s Selznick Studio in the mailroom. Despite winning several talent contests in Louisiana, he did not find success until 1959 with his ballad “When It’s Springtime in Alaska (It’s Forty Below).”Born in Los Angeles, California, Horton was raised by sharecropping parents who split their time between California and Texas.
