About Johanna Reiss
Johanna Reiss is a Dutch-Jewish memoir writer and children’s author known for her depictions of the Holocaust. She was born on April 4, 1932, in Winterswijk, Netherlands. During World War II, she lived in hiding in the Dutch village of Usselo.
Reiss’ literary works include A Hidden Life and The Upstairs Room. She received numerous accolades for her writing, including the Newbery Honor and the Jewish Book Council’s award for children’s literature. Additionally, she was honored with the Buxtehuder Bulle Prize.
In the 1950s, Reiss settled in the United States and later married Jim Reiss.
