About Jocelyn Bell Burnell
Jocelyn Bell Burnell is an Irish astrophysicist born on July 15, 1943 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She is best known for her discovery of the first radio pulsars and her tenure as President of the Royal Astronomical Society from 2002 to 2004.
Prior to her renowned career, Burnell attended Lurgan College where she was among the first females permitted to study science. Subsequently, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Philosophy from the University of Glasgow in 1965.
In February 2013, she was recognized as one of the 100 most powerful women in the United Kingdom by BBC Radio’s Woman’s Hour. Additionally, Burnell hails from a family with ties to scientific endeavors; her father contributed architectural expertise to design projects at Armagh Planetarium.
