About Joanne Brackeen
Joanne Brackeen (born July 26, 1938 in California) is an accomplished jazz pianist. She made history as the first female member of Art Blakey’s jazz Messengers and has also performed with renowned musicians such as Joe Henderson and Stan Getz. Before gaining fame, she honed her jazz skills by imitating Frankie Carle’s albums.
In addition to her performance career, Brackeen has shared her knowledge and expertise as a professor at The New School and Berklee College of Music. She was previously married to tenor saxophonist Charles Brackeen.
