About Joanna Baillie
Joanna Baillie, born on September 11, 1762 in Scotland, was a renowned poet and playwright of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. She is most celebrated for her significant work “The Plays on the Passions,” published in 1798. Baillie was a prominent figure within literary society, regularly hosting gatherings at her residence in Hampstead, England.
Prior to gaining recognition as a writer, Baillie attended a boarding school in Glasgow at the age of ten where she developed an appreciation for theater and playwriting. Despite facing gender-based challenges during her lifetime, she achieved considerable fame and insisted on being acknowledged as an authentic playwright rather than merely a “closet” dramatist.
Born into the family of Presbyterian minister, Baillie opted not to marry due to a small inheritance received from her uncle. This autonomy allowed her to pursue her literary ambitions unhindered by familial obligations.
