About Joan Brown
Joan Brown was born on February 13, 1938 in San Francisco, California. She was a painter associated with the second generation of the Bay Area Figurative Movement. Brown graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute, where she studied with Elmer Bischoff and had her first exhibition at the Whitney Museum in New York at the age of 22.
Her figurative paintings combined personal symbols with bright colors and cartoon-like drawings. She was married to sculptor Manuel Neri for four years.
