About Joan Benoit
Joan Benoit was born on May 16, 1957 in Maine. She is a notable runner who achieved success as a marathoner. In the 1984 Olympics, she secured a gold medal in the inaugural women’s marathon event. Prior to her fame, she turned to long-distance running as part of her rehabilitation from a leg injury and later competed at Bowdoin College and North Carolina State.
Benoit held the world record for the women’s marathon from April 18, 1983 until April 21, 1985 – an accomplishment that lasted for two years. Off the track, she raised two children with her husband Scott Samuelson.
