She is known for her work as a Young Adult Author, with notable books including Backwater (1999) and Hope Was Here (2000). Her writing often explores themes of family dynamics, substance abuse, and self-esteem through teenage protagonists.
Prior to becoming a successful author, Bauer worked for the Chicago Tribune and McGraw-Hill in her early adulthood. She published her first novel, Squashed, in 1992.
Bauer has received several prestigious literary honors throughout her career including the Newbery Award and the Golden Kite Award. She currently resides in New York City with her husband Doug Langham and their daughter.
