Jessie Tarbox Beals was born on December 23, 1870, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Notable as the first American woman to publish works of photojournalism, she is remembered for her night photography and her images of New York’s Greenwich Village and the St. Louis World’s Fair.
Before pursuing a career in photography, Beals worked as a schoolteacher in Massachusetts, U.S.A., where she first became interested in the art form after winning a prize camera from a magazine contest.
In 1905, she opened a photography studio in New York City. She was married to Alfred Tennyson Beals from 1897 until 1917 and had a child named Nanette during their marriage.”
