About Jessie Field Shambaugh
Jessie Field Shambaugh was born on June 21, 1881 in Iowa. She is best known for designing the 4-H club’s famous clover emblem and coming up with the name of the organization. The name “4-H” derives from the “heart,” “head,” “hands,” and “home” leaves on her pin.
Aside from her contributions to the 4-H club, Shambaugh was also an educator and served as school superintendent of Page County, Iowa.
Before gaining recognition for her work with the 4-H club, she worked as a schoolteacher in Iowa, Wisconsin, and Montana after graduating from Tabor College. In addition to her career as an educator, she also worked for the Young Men’s Christian Association’s (YMCA’s) New York office starting in 1912.
She married Ira William Shambaugh at the age of thirty-six in San Bernardino County, California.
