Jessica Savitch (born February 1, 1947 in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania) was an American journalist celebrated for her tenure as the first female anchor of a nationally-broadcast weekend news program. She is remembered for her time anchoring the NBC Nightly News and hosting the PBS news program Frontline.
Savitch graduated from Ithaca College in New York before starting her career with positions at Houston’s KHOU-TV channel and New York’s WCBS-AM radio station.
Tragically, Savitch died in a single-vehicle car accident that also claimed the life of New York Post executive Martin Fischbein.
Born to Florence Goldberger and David Savitch, Jessica spent her childhood in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. She was briefly married to Mel Korn followed by Donald Payne in the early 1980s.
