About Jessica Andrea Watkins
Jessica Andrea Watkins (born May 14, 1988) is an American astronaut and geologist. She is known for being the first black woman to be assigned a mission on the International Space Station and has been selected as part of the Artemis team, which aims to return humans to the moon.
Before her career as an astronaut, Watkins received her bachelor’s degree in geological and environmental sciences from Stanford University and a PhD in geology from UCLA. She then became a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology before joining NASA’s astronaut program in 2017.
In addition to her academic and professional achievements, Watkins was a national Rugby player during her time at Stanford University. She played for the USA Eagles and was a member of the Division I national champion team in 2008. Additionally, she represented the US team during the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens where she emerged as their lead scorer.
Watkins was born in Gaithersburg, Maryland to Michael and Carolyn Watkins before moving with her family to Lafayette, Colorado at a young age.
