Jennie Kidd Trout, born on April 21, 1841 in Scotland, was a pioneering figure as the first woman to legally practice medicine in Canada. She is celebrated for establishing Toronto’s Therapeutic and Electrical Institute. Prior to her illustrious career, Trout pursued her medical education at Pennsylvania’s Women’s Medical College, driven by her own health challenges.
After retiring from active medical practice, Jennie played a crucial role in founding a women’s medical school at Queen’s University. Her family immigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1847.
