About Jemima Wilkinson

Jemima Wilkinson, born on November 29, 1752 in Rhode Island, was a prominent Quaker religious leader. She is best known for leading the Society of Universal Friends sect and advocating for beliefs such as sexual abstinence and gender neutrality.

Wilkinson’s followers adhered to the notion that they were neither male nor female and adopted new names in rejection of their original birth names. Prior to her religious leadership, she grew up attending silent worship at the Smithfield Meeting House in Rhode Island. In the 1770s, following a severe bout with typhoid fever, she claimed to have been divinely chosen by God to preach his word.

Upon relocating to New York, both Wilkinson and her followers made history as the first white people whom Native Americans in the region traded with. Her parents were Amy and Jeremiah Wilkinson.
