About Jeannette Piccard
Jeannette Piccard (born January 5, 1895 in Chicago, Illinois) was a pioneering high-altitude balloon pilot who made history as the first woman to guide a balloon to the stratosphere. She attended Bryn Mawr College, the University of Chicago, and the University of Minnesota, earning degrees in psychology, philosophy, organic chemistry, and education before embarking on her aviation career.
In 1934, she achieved an altitude of nearly 11 miles over Lake Erie accompanied by her husband Jean Piccard. Throughout this groundbreaking flight she retained control of her aircraft. Jeannette’s husband and his twin brother Auguste became renowned for their own series of pioneering balloon flights in the 1930s.
