About Janisse Ray
Janisse Ray (born February 2, 1962) is an American memoirist known for her award-winning book Ecology of a Cracker Childhood (2000). She has also published a poetry collection titled A House of Branches and a nonfiction work called Pinhook: Finding Wholeness in a Fragmented Land.
Ray attended North Georgia College before completing her bachelor’s degree at Florida State University. She further pursued her education and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Montana.
Born into poverty to Christian fundamentalists Franklin and Lee Ada Ray in Baxley, Georgia, she later became an environmental activist and contributed nature-themed pieces to magazines like Orion and Audubon. Additionally, she wrote for the NPR program Living on Earth.
Ray is also known for giving birth to a son named Silas Ausable.
