About Janet Fish
Janet Fish, born on May 18, 1938 in Massachusetts, is a renowned American painter known for her still-life paintings. Her work has been exhibited at prestigious galleries including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Throughout her career, she has received three MacDowell Fellowships and an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award.
Prior to gaining fame as a painter, Fish honed her artistic skills through training at Smith College, the Art Students League of New York, and the Yale University School of Art and Architecture. She also taught in the visual art departments of several notable institutions such as the University of Chicago and Parsons The New School for Design over various phases of her career.
Coming from a family with deep artistic roots—her sister being a photographer and her grandfather an American Impressionist artist—Fish spent her early years in Massachusetts and Bermuda before eventually settling in New York and Vermont. Despite experiencing two divorces during her lifetime, she continues to be celebrated for both her contributions to Realist art as well as for being part of an esteemed lineage within American visual arts.
