About Jamira Burley
Jamira Burley (born September 13, 1988) is an American human rights activist and social impact strategist. She is best known for her role as the Head of Youth Engagement and Skills at the Global Business Coalition for Education Summit and as a MIT Media Lab Director’s Fellow.
Before gaining prominence, Burley attended Overbrook High School where she founded Panther Peace Corps, a violence prevention group. Her efforts in reducing violence by 30% led to her receiving a grant from Governor Ed Rendell to expand the program to the ten high schools in Philadelphia with the highest rates of violence. She later graduated from Temple University, where she studied business and international studies.
In 2014, Burley was honored with the “White House Champion of Change” award for her advocacy work that earned recognition from Washington DC. Moreover, she also made an appearance in a video shown on the opening night of the 2020 Democratic National Convention alongside Joe Biden and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
Born into a large family with fifteen siblings, Burley has experienced firsthand the impact of gun violence within her community. Her father served time incarcerated while her mother had multiple convictions prior to turning things around.
