About Jahana Hayes
Jahana Hayes, born on March 8, 1973 in Waterbury, Connecticut, is a prominent politician who currently serves as the U.S. Representative for Connecticut’s 5th congressional district since January 2019. She made history as the first African-American woman and African-American Democrat to represent Connecticut in Congress.
Before pursuing a career in politics, Hayes had humble beginnings growing up in public housing projects in Waterbury. She obtained her associate’s degree from Naugatuck Valley Community College and her bachelor’s degree from Southern Connecticut State University.
Prior to entering politics, she worked as a teacher for 15 years. Her exceptional dedication to education was recognized when she earned the National Teacher of the Year award while teaching at John F. Kennedy High School in Waterbury in 2016.
Hayes is supported by her husband Milford and their four children.
