Irma Serrano, born on December 9, 1933 in Mexico, is a renowned folk singer who gained prominence in the ranchero and corrido genres. She emerged as one of the leading figures in Mexican folk music during the 1960s and received the prestigious Macuilxochitl Award for Revelation Songwriter in 1963.
Her singing career took off when she signed with Columbia Records in 1962. Irma Serrano’s contribution to folklore was recognized with her win of the Folklore Revelation Trophy that same year. In addition to her musical accomplishments, she also pursued acting and appeared in over 20 films throughout her lifetime.
Irma Serrano came from a family with strong artistic roots; her father was an author, poet, and politician named Santiago Serrano Ruiz, while her mother Maria Castro Dominguez hailed from local aristocracy.
