About Irene Joliot-Curie

Irene Joliot-Curie was a French chemist born on September 12, 1897, in Paris, France. She is best known for her Nobel Prize in Chemistry win in 1935 for the discovery of artificial radioactivity alongside her husband.

Tragically, in 1946 she was exposed to polonium, a chemical element discovered by her parents in 1898. Many believed that this exposure led to her death from leukemia ten years later.

Prior to gaining fame as a scientist, Joliot-Curie studied at the Sorbonne’s Faculty of Science until World War I erupted.

An interesting fact about Joliot-Curie is that both of her parents were scientists and both of her children followed into scientific pursuits as well.

She accomplished the feat of winning the Nobel Prize with her husband Frederic Joliot-Curie nine years after their marriage.
