About Ingrid Newkirk
Ingrid Newkirk is a prominent figure known as the co-founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). She was born on June 11, 1949, in England. Her work was pivotal in amending the United States’ Animal Welfare Act in 1985.
Newkirk’s involvement in animal rights dates back to the early 1970s when she contributed to legislation that established a public fund for veterinary care and set up Washington D.C.’s first clinic for spaying and neutering pets. In collaboration with fellow activist Alex Pacheco, she went on to found PETA a decade later.
She has authored several publications focused on animal rights, including The PETA Practical Guide to Animal Rights (2009) and Making Kind Choices (2005).
In her personal life, Newkirk grew up in England as the daughter of a charity worker mother and an engineer father. After moving to the United States during her late teens, she entered into a ten-year marriage with Steve Newkirk.
