About Inge Lehmann
Inge Lehmann (1888-05-13) was a Danish geologist known for her groundbreaking work in geophysics and seismology. In the mid 1930s, she made the revolutionary discovery that Earth’s outer core is molten while its inner core is solid.
Before making this discovery, Lehmann studied mathematics at Cambridge University and the University of Copenhagen. After graduating, she became head of the Geodetical Institute of Denmark’s seismology unit.
Throughout her illustrious career, Lehmann received numerous honors including the 1971 William Bowie Medal, the 1960 Gordon Wood Award, and the 1977 Medal of the Seismological Society of America.
Born in Copenhagen to Ida Sophie Torsleff and psychologist Alfred Georg Ludvik Lehmann, Inge Lehmann’s contributions to our understanding of Earth’s structure remain an enduring legacy in geological science.
