About Ieng Thirith
Ieng Thirith (born March 10, 1932) was a prominent figure as the wife of Ieng Sary, co-founder of the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, where he served as minister of foreign affairs for Democratic Kampuchea. In 2007, both she and her husband were arrested on suspicion of genocide and crimes against humanity.
Thirith’s educational achievements included studying at the Sorbonne in France, becoming the first Cambodian to earn a degree in English literature. Tragically, she was later declared unfit to stand trial due to her Alzheimer’s disease.
In family life roles with her sister Khieu Ponnary and brother-in-law Pol Pot — along with her husband — they were infamously known as Cambodia’s Gang of Four.
