About Ibtihaj Muhammad
Ibtihaj Muhammad is an American fencer born on December 4, 1985, in Maplewood, New Jersey. She gained recognition for winning a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics and being the first American athlete to compete at the Olympics wearing a hijab. This historic achievement led to her inclusion in Time magazine’s list of 100 Most Influential People.
Before rising to fame as an Olympian, Muhammad grew up in Maplewood and started fencing at the age of thirteen. She completed her high school education at Columbia High School in 2003.
In addition to her athletic pursuits, Muhammad established Louella, a clothing line aimed at women from Middle Eastern backgrounds. Her father Eugene worked as a police officer while her mother Denise was an elementary school teacher; she also has four siblings.
