About Holly Hughes
Holly Hughes, born on March 10, 1955 in Michigan, is a performance artist known for her feminist-themed works such as Dress Suits to Hire and Well of Horniness. She gained recognition and accolades including an Obie Award, a Lambda Book Award, and multiple National Endowment for the Arts grants.
After graduating from Kalamazoo College in Michigan, she moved to New York City where she began performing at the Women’s One World (WOW) Cafe. Notably, Hughes was involved in a 1990 Supreme Court case where then-National Endowment for the Arts Chairman John Frohnmayer withdrew NEA funding for their projects due to its content.
An openly lesbian artist, Hughes explores themes of femininity and sexuality in her work.
