About Hesba Stretton
Hesba Stretton, born on July 27th, 1832 in England, was a renowned children’s author and one of the most popular Evangelical writers of the 19th century. Despite having had little formal education, she briefly attended the Old Hall, a school in her hometown. Her experiences while aiding impoverished and homeless children in Manchester inspired many of her literary works.
Stretton is best known for her notable work “Jessica’s First Prayer,” published in 1866. She played a significant role in raising awareness throughout England about the plight of slum children and contributed to Victorian literature through her portrayal of child street urchin characters.
She and her sister grew up in Wellington, Shropshire, England where she later taught religion and morality through her writings.
