About Helen Maroulis
Helen Maroulis, born on September 19, 1991 in Rockville, Maryland, is a Greek-American freestyle wrestler known for representing the United States in the women’s 55-kg and 53-kg categories. She has also achieved Olympic athlete status.
Maroulis gained wrestling experience in high school before attending Missouri Baptist University and later transferring to compete for Simon Fraser University. She dedicated her time to training at the U.S. Olympic Education Center at Northern Michigan University.
In 2015, she won a gold medal at the World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada. Her historic achievement came during the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 when she became the first American to win a gold medal in women’s freestyle wrestling at an Olympic Games.
She is the daughter of Paula and Yiannis Maroulis; her grandparents immigrated from Kalamos, Greece to the United States in the 1960s. Helen was raised in Rockville, Maryland.
