About Helen Magill White
Helen Magill White (born November 28, 1853) was a prominent figure in 19th-century Rhode Island history. She made history as the first woman in the United States to earn a Ph.D. in 1881.
Prior to this achievement, Helen had pursued a career in education and became an educator at Swarthmore College after studying there herself. She later earned her Ph.D. in Greek from Boston University, further solidifying her place as a trailblazer for women’s educational achievements.
Tragically, her husband Andrew D. White passed away in 1918.
