About Helen Frankenthaler

Helen Frankenthaler (born December 12, 1928) is an American painter known for her contributions to the Abstract Expressionist and Color Field movements. Born in New York City, she gained acclaim for her iconic work “Mountains and Sea” from 1952 and has been featured in significant exhibitions such as the 1964 Post-Painterly Abstraction exhibition and a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in 1989.

Frankenthaler’s early education took place at the Dalton School before she pursued higher learning at Bennington College, where she met writer Clement Greenberg. The pair were involved in a five-year-long relationship.

In addition to her artistic achievements, Frankenthaler received the National Medal of Arts in 2001. She also has family ties to legal prominence through her father Alfred Frankenthaler, who served as a highly esteemed New York State Supreme Court judge. Furthermore, Helen was married to fellow artist Robert Motherwell for thirteen years.
