About Hedda Hopper
Hedda Hopper was an American journalist born on May 2, 1885, in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. She gained fame as a Hollywood gossip columnist and rivaled film critic Louella Parsons.
Her column “Hedda Hopper’s Hollywood” first appeared in the Los Angeles Times in the late 1930s. Hopper’s influence extended to feeding the anti-communist hysteria of the McCarthy era by naming alleged communists.
Prior to her career as a journalist, she worked as a Broadway chorus girl and grew up in a German Baptist Brethren family in Pennsylvania with her siblings. In 1913, she married actor DeWolf Hopper and they raised their son William Hopper who also became an actor.
