Hattie McDaniel, born on June 10, 1895 in Wichita, Kansas, was a prominent African American movie actress. She is best known for being the first African American to win an Academy Award for her performance as Mammy in Gone with the Wind. Her career also included roles in Beulah and Family Honeymoon.
Prior to her fame as an actress, she worked various jobs including maid, washroom attendant, and cook when acting opportunities were scarce.
Despite winning the prestigious award, she was unable to attend the ceremony due to segregation laws at that time. In her personal life, she was married to George Langford but he passed away shortly after their marriage. Additionally, her brother Sam McDaniel appeared alongside the Three Stooges in Heavenly Daze.
