About Harriet Monroe
Harriet Monroe was a poet born on December 23, 1860, in Illinois. She is best known for founding, publishing, and editing Poetry, an influential literary magazine.
In addition to her work as an editor, Monroe was also a poet who published collections such as Valeria and Dance of the Seasons.
Monroe grew up in Chicago and developed an interest in poetry at a young age. During her youth, she corresponded with notable authors such as Robert Louis Stevenson.
Her autobiography, A Poet’s Life: Seventy Years in a Changing World, explores her childhood love for literature that she developed from reading her father’s home library containing numerous legal works due to him being a lawyer.
Tragically, Monroe died of a cerebral hemorrhage while preparing to climb Peru’s Macchu Picchu.
