Harriet Lane (1830-05-19) was a political wife known for her role as acting First Lady during the presidency of her uncle, James Buchanan. Born in Pennsylvania, Lane was raised by her uncle following the death of her father at age eleven. She became well-known for her extensive collection of European art, which she donated to the government after her passing.
Lane married Henry Elliott Johnston, a Baltimore banker, at the age of thirty-six. In recognition of her contributions and impact, three vessels were named in her honor by the United States Coast Guard.
