About Harriet E. Wilson
Harriet E. Wilson (March 15, 1825 – ?) was an African-American novelist born in Milford, New Hampshire. She is recognized as the first female African-American novelist for her anonymous publication of Our Nig in 1859.
Prior to gaining recognition as a writer, Wilson worked as an indentured servant until she reached eighteen years old. Her debut novel, Our Nig or Sketches from the Life of a Free Black, was relatively unknown during her lifetime but was rediscovered by scholar Henry Louis Gates in 1982.
Wilson hailed from New Hampshire and came from a family with mixed heritage – her father being African-American and her mother Irish. In 1851 she wed Thomas Wilson.
