About Hannah Hoch
Hannah Höch (1889-11-01) was a pioneering German photographer and artist known for her groundbreaking work in the photomontage art form during the Weimar period. Born in Gotha, Germany, Höch studied at the National Institute of the Museum of Arts and Crafts under renowned artist Emil Orlik before becoming involved with the Berlin Dada movement through her friendship with Raoul Hausmann.
Notably, Höch included same-sex couples in her artwork, which was revolutionary for its time. She often explored feminist and political themes within her pieces and is best known for “Cut with the Kitchen Knife through the Beer-Belly of the Weimar Republic” from 1919, a powerful socio-political critique of her homeland.
In her personal life, she had relationships with Raoul Hausmann from 1915 to 1922 and later entered into a partnership with female writer Til Brugman from 1926 to 1935. Höch was also married to Kurt Matthies from 1938 until 1944.
